A SMALLER yarding of 683 head on Wednesday at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, had buyers busy in bidding for necessary stock for the processing plants.

This and good quality cattle helped prices across the sale.

A top penning of 122 bullocks saw a nice rise of 12 cents on average to 160.7 and range of 126 to 177.6 cents.

Sixty three heifers also made good increases with a rise of 7.5 cents to 146.4; heifers saw a range of 112.6 to 168.2.

Steers made a slightly easier rise of four cents for the 105 on offer, with heavy steers ranging from 122 to 179.6 and light 130 to 145 cents.

Vealers rose nicely to gain 10 cents to average 168.7 and were of commendable quality; this week’s sale saw heavy veal range from 98.6 to 209.6 and light 100 to 205.2.

Good competition for cows and bulls on Thursday gave prices for both categories a nice boost.

Quality was as good if not better than recent sales, especially in the beef cows which also made up 65 per cent of the yarding, which had a large bearing on the rise in average price.

Bulls ranged from 110 to 152 cents to finish four cents higher at 131 cents, while cows rose nine cents to 118.8 for a range starting at 85 cents and lifting to 155 cents.
