REBECCA McLochlan has a passion for helping others but has just received a taste of her own medicine.

The 18-year-old budding Selby nurse recently received a much needed boost in time for her first university lecture.

She was awarded a $1000 Ranges Community Health scholarship.

The scholarships were made possible with donations from the Eastern Ranges GP Association and Yarra Ranges Council.

Ranges Community Health CEO Karyn McPeake said the scholarships were a prime example of re-investing in the future.

Ms McLochlan was shocked to be named the winner of Mayoral Community Encouragement Award but said it would be a great help in her first year of study.

“It’s going to be so much help… it will help with books and I have to get immunisation,” she said.

Ms McLochlan has always wanted to work in health care.

“I thought nursing would be more hands on and its helping others which is my main focus in life,” she said.

“It’s the perfect thing for me.”

Ms McLochlan is excited about starting her first class at Deakin University in Burwood.

For the past two years becoming a nurse is all she has thought about.

“I’m really excited about starting,” she said.

Although unsure what her speciality will be, she said the emergency department would be an exciting place to start.

Ms McLochlan also wants to one day branch out into midwifery.
