GERALDINE Phelan is putting the feminine touch back into fishing.
The 64-year-old is one of only four female members of the Sunshine Fly Casting Club but is already making a splash of her competition.
The mother-of-two may be a rarity in her sport but insists she’s just as good as her male counterparts.
“I give them a run for their money,” Geraldine said.
“I compete just as hard as they do and I often beat them, too.”
It’s no wonder Geraldine is such an expert with a rod.
She’s been honing her skills for more than 20 years.
“Fishing has always been a family affair,” Geraldine said.
“We used to go down to Geelong every Sunday morning to do it.
“When my kids were little we used to take them down to Sunshine Pool and teach them how to cast.
“Now, my daughter still does it and she’s roped her two kids into it, too.”
Geraldine and her husband, also a keen fly caster, travel around Victoria to compete in fishing competitions.
Although she’s a lot of success herself, Geraldine says her husband is the more competitive of the pair.
“He’s definitely more interested in the sport than I am.
“Sometimes I go along to spend time with him because he’s so enthusiastic.
“It’s either go out with him or stay home.”
Geraldine said she hoped to inspire more women to take up the sport.
“I think that traditionally it’s been more of a man’s sport but anyone can do it.
“It would be great to have more women join because it’s a bit boring if you’re the only one in a sea of men.”
The Sunshine Fly Casting Club is calling for more members, including females, males, seniors and juniors.
Instructors provide tuition and schedule monthly competitions.
