A MONTH after a major oil spill at Altona’s Mobil refinery, a minor gas leak erupted on Thursday morning.
The Melbourne Fire Brigade attended the scene after a minor gas leak in a pipeline at about 7am.
This follows a Mobil tank leak of an estimated 30,000 litres of petrol on 9 February, which was contained by 60 MFB officers the following day.
A fire indicator panel triggered the emergency call last Thursday and four MFB units arrived and had the gas leak under control by about 7.30am.
MFB units remained on scene afterwards.
The MFB suspected the leak to be Butane gas, which when mixed with propane becomes auto LPG for cars.
A Mobile spokeswoman said Mobil was investigating the cause of the leak and was unclear as to what type of gas it was.
She also said investigations were ongoing into the petrol leak.
The spokeswoman said Mobil apologised for any concern or inconvenience this may have caused the public.
The incidents follow a Mobil pipeline leak in a Newport residential area in 2006 and a million litres of fuel that leaked from an underground pipe in 2004.
The company is still cleaning up after both of these incidents.
