BUDDING young fisherman are learning the tricks of the trade from some more experienced hands at Blind Bight.

And, according to the tutors, some of the old-timers had better be on their toes as the youngsters have shown great promise.

A few members of the Blind Bight Boat Owners Club take fishing lessons each Thursday from 4.30pm to 5.30pm at the Blind Bight Community Centre.

Teacher Clive Birchmore said the club initially planned to hold three classes over three weeks, but they proved too popular.

“They don’t want to go home,” he said.

“Most of them are locals and they’ve got an uncle, father or brother who fishes.”

The students learn basic fishing techniques such as knots and tackle preparation and go down to the ponds for casting practice.

“It’s been so successful. It’s good fun.”

The lessons are free and the club provides most of the basics, but children are asked to bring their own rods if possible.
