WHITTLESEA volunteer Lina Amerena will support Daffodil Day for the eighth year in a row next month as she helps raise money for cancer research.
Mrs Amerena first volunteered in 2002 after the death of her best friend, and she hasn’t missed a year since.
“I wanted to give something back to honour her memory,” Mrs Amerena said.
Mrs Amerena said giving up a few hours of her time helped raise money for research into all types of cancers. “It is also a very rewarding experience, and an easy thing to do to show your support,” she said.
Cancer Council Victoria is looking for 14 Whittlesea residents for a local stall on Daffodil Day, Friday 27 August.
Cancer Council spokesperson Bree Attwood said some 350 volunteer stalls would operate across Victoria this Daffodil Day with the hope of raising $9 million across the country.
“If you think the one in two who gets cancer is one too many, then please volunteer for Daffodil Day,” Ms Attwood said. “Raising funds is vital if we are to change the statistics.”
Ms Attwood said around 9,500 Australians would hear the words ‘you have cancer’ in August alone.
“The statistics are confronting but there is reason to hope, and we are making progress,” she said.
“For example, the survival rate for many common cancers has increased by more than 30 per cent in the past two decades. Daffodil Day gives hope for a brighter, cancer-free future for ourselves, and for those we love.”
All funds raised on Daffodil Day enable life-saving research, prevention programs and support services for people affected by cancer.
“Being a not-for-profit we rely heavily on the generosity of others to help us fight cancer,” Ms Attwood said. “We are grateful for the support shown by Whittlesea residents in the past and hope that the local community will come out in force again this year.”
A range of daffodil merchandise will be available for purchase throughout August. Visit www.daffodilday.com.au for more information.
